Robert C. Beutter Riverfront Park
REA’s plan focused on reconnecting the city to its riverfront through a mixed-use development that extended the street grid of downtown Mishawaka to the St. Joseph River; a 5.5-acre urban riverfront park would serve as the centerpiece of the development.
REA then prepared design and construction documents for the park and several phases of riverfront trail. The highlight of the park is a decorative race – a water feature which follows the route of a historic hydroelectric canal once used by industries along the riverfront. The race features a series of unique weirs, custom bridges, sculpture elements, and ornamental walks for viewing the water effects.
Additional amenities within the park include artwork, native planting gardens, an outdoor performance area, and a promenade along the river with cantilevered overlooks.
