Mr. Zant joined REA in 2015 as a site civil engineer, overseeing the civil engineering and site permitting aspects on a wide variety of the firm’s projects. John has over 20 years of experience in the design and management of civil engineering projects with both public and private clients. As a project leader, John brings demonstrated experience and strong technical skills on large, complex infrastructure projects, leading diverse multidisciplinary teams, and developing and implementing strategic plans to achieve project priorities.
John has helped clients realize their project goals by driving project decisions to align with those goals. Through strategic and systematic planning, he has helped municipalities and businesses realize their goals and keep projects in scope, on schedule, and on budget. He has a passion for effective and strong project management, collaborating with clients and staff to deliver projects that promote economic development and community pride, developing and mentoring junior staff, and exceeding the client’s expectations while working under short deadlines and tight fiscal constraints.
John has extensive experience providing civil engineering services for a wide variety of site developments, trails and greenways, and transportation enhancement projects, as well as drainage and sanitary design, flow monitoring and modeling. He served as Project Leader for two of the most renowned trails in the State of Indiana – the B-Line Trail in Bloomington and the Pennsy Trail in Cumberland. For these projects, John provided site engineering, prepared construction documents, and completed permitting in accordance with INDOT policies and procedures. These projects involved multiple street crossings, pedestrian bridges, utility coordination, incorporation of trail amenities, and the integration of public art.
John served as Project Manager for the 56th and Emerson pedestrian and bike trail within the City of Indianapolis, responsible for the design, plans, specifications and permitting for a prefabricated bridge over Fall Creek, and the development of a boardwalk over challenging topography within the chosen route. He also performed site engineering duties for Billericay Park Expansion in Fishers, IN, preparing construction documents and completing permitting for the site, which featured a splash pad system and new community building. He also served as Project Manager for the Downtown Revitalization Project in Rensselear, IN which featured a 4-acre park site funded by Transportation Enhancement funds in accordance with INDOT policies and procedures, and involved trails, park amenities, and rehabilitation of a historic bowstring truss across a stream corridor.
John prepared a Stormwater Master Plan Update for Decatur, IL which updated the citywide Master Plan for stormwater drainage improvements; his work included an inventory of drainage problem areas, project prioritization methodology, policy and procedure development, regulatory review, and funding evaluations. He has also served as an on-call infrastructure plan reviewer for the City of Indianapolis, completing reviews of plans, specifications and drainage reports submitted for private developments within Marion County to ensure compliance with code requirements.
John also performed site engineering and prepared construction documents for the City of Lawrence Fire Station #5 and Ivy Tech Training Facility in Lawrence, IN. This 4.5 acre site is used as a training center for aspiring fire personnel.
