Today marks an exciting milestone as the White River State Park Development Commission breaks ground on the largest expansion in the park’s history!
Set along the White River and adjacent to the historic GM Stamping Plant, this 13-acre addition redefines Indianapolis’ connection to its urban riverfront. At today’s ceremony, Governor Eric Holcomb, Mayor Joe Hogsett, Jake Oakman (Executive Director of the White River State Park Development Commission), and city officials join to celebrate the transformation of this legacy site into a vibrant destination space.
Designed collaboratively by Rundell Ernstberger Associates (REA) and DAVID RUBIN Land Collective, this extension will feature a stunning “river theater” overlooking the water, direct river access, a river beach, and multiple pavilions. Enhanced by new trails and connections to the Innovation District and Valley Neighborhood, the site will offer the first direct river engagement for White River State Park, creating an inclusive and accessible community hub for recreation, gathering, and observation.
As project lead Daniel Liggett of REA shares, “Our work with the White River State Park Commission establishes a welcoming and accessible urban riverfront park, offering a distinctive perspective of our city’s skyline.”
We can’t wait to see this park come to life, reconnecting downtown Indianapolis with the White River in meaningful, memorable ways!
